Some of the best shocks that I've ever ridden on were air shocks (Fox Evol). I can assure you that they compress.
I do wonder though, are you doing this for aesthetics? Do you want it to expand only and not compress?

Suspension tuning
Compression and rebound should be added, as well as more adjustment in the spring rates (hardness). This would give an enormous boost to car-making capabilities.
